How Team-Building Cemented Our Janitorial Success in Texas

One of the questions we are asked regularly is how we became successful in the janitorial industry in Texas. We are proud to have a high client retention rate of 95% (supposedly unheard of in our industry) and many of our 155 employees have been with us for more than 10 years. We realized early on in this business that we couldn’t build a great company by focusing solely on clients and ignoring our people. We would like to share some of our secrets to success.

We Put Our Employees FIRST

Many companies and business owners put an enormous amount of thought into whether or not their customers are satisfied. Of course this is important – the customers bring us business. What is oftentimes overlooked is that the “internal customer,” (the employees), keep us in business! An effective manager of a janitorial company can determine that when customers are unhappy, it is really a symptom of our employees being unhappy. At Southwest Cleaning, our belief – which has since become our policy, is that we treat our employees in ways that make them feel respected and appreciated. What we have discovered is that this in turn reflects on the way they then treat the customers of Southwest. Attempting to satisfy our customers without giving thought to our "internal customer" is like a diabetic trying to control their illness with insulin injections and paying no attention to their diet. The supreme client retention we are experiencing is in actuality, a symptom of happy employees!

Methods and What Matters Most

Put yourself in their shoes. Have you ever taken the time to consider what you are asking your staff to do? For instance, is this a task that you would like to do? Are you asking them to attend a location that is far from their home? Is this particular employee a good fit for the customer? One thing we attempt to do at Southwest rather than just place staff members with our customers at random is to put each specific individual in a situation where they are most likely to be successful. Don’t set your employees up for failure – always look for a successful, sustainable situation!

Pose questions to your employees. Take the time to ask your employees questions that matter to them. These are the people that work with your customers on a daily basis. Not only are they accustomed to the various challenges that arise; they can come up with the best solutions to these situations. If given the opportunity, your employees will surprise you! We have found in our janitorial business in Texas that many times people are more apt to work hard at something whenever they can make a contribution by providing their own feedback.
